Class: Language and Representation blog tasks

 1) Write an NCIS analysis for the episode - using notes from the screening in class. Make specific, detailed reference to moments in the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots and movement, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.)

Co-Owner of a lonely heart

Narrative: Corakinus Tries to separate his an April's heart from each other.

Character: April Maclean, Shadow Kin, Ram, Corakinus

Iconography: CGI character of Aliens, Swords, torch,

Setting: April's Back garden, Corakinus planet

2) How does Todorov's theory of equilibrium apply to Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Try and use the expanded version of Todorov's theory: Equilibrium - Disruption - Recognition - Reparation - New equilibrium.

Equilibrium-April and her mother are arguing (typical daughter and mum argument).
Disruption-April's Dad interrupt's the argument by appearing to the house and talks about his encounter with April and she drew swords against him.
Recognition-Ram tries to stop April from killing her dad
Reparation-April makes a portal and goes to Corakinus planet and Ram jumps in after her.

3) Applying Propp's character theory, what character roles do each of the main characters in Class fit into? Alternatively, you may wish to discuss how characters do not fit Propp's character types.
April fits into the hero character. This doesn't fit into Propp's character type because April is very violent at some point during the episode and show's villainy behavior and stereotypically male gender are the hero's.
Ram fits into sidekick.

4) What enigma and action codes (Barthes) can you find in Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Make specific, detailed reference to the text using media terminology (e.g. media language - camera shots, diegetic/non-diegetic sound, mise-en-scene etc.)
Enigma codes-
April is confronting her dad at the house and she swings the sword and the scene is then changed to the door being broken.
Action codes-
Low angle shots shows that April has higher authority than her dad and this is also shown when Corakinus is chanting and confronting the Shadow kin scientist fails to remove April's heart from his heart.

5) What examples of binary opposition (Levi-Strauss) can you find in Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? How do these create narrative or drama for the audience?
April is more stronger then her father and Ram and usually Male's are the most dominant gender.

Representations
1) How is gender represented in Class - Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Are gender stereotypes reinforced or subverted?
April being a girl is shown to be more dominant, she play's as the hero in this narrative. Ram who is a man is shown to be an helper. The gender stereotypes are shown to more subversive and not reinforced.

2) How is age (e.g. teenagers; older people like teachers or parents) represented in Class - Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Does the show reinforce or challenge stereotypes about young people?
Teenagers are shown to be more superior than the adults as they know what's happening and the parents don't have a clue to what's happening. This reinforce the stereotype because in a teen drama it's all about the teenagers and not necessarily the adults.

3) How is race and ethnicity represented in Class - Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Are  stereotypes reinforced or subverted?
Ram being Indian is shown to be a jock and athletic. Usually an Indian wouldn't be in sports. Stereotypes are being subverted.

4) How is sexuality represented in Class - Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? How does this reflect the BBC's remit to represent modern Britain?
There is an gay couple. This reflect the BBC's remit to represent modern Britain by showing a gay couple.

5) How is disability represented in Class - Co-owner of a Lonely Heart? Why are disabled people generally under-represented in the media and how does Class try to address this?
Disability isn't shown that much as it is April mum who is disable and she isn't a main character. Disable people are generally under represented in the media because they are useless. Class tries to address by not making a disable main character.
